Discovering Aberdeen Falls: Sri Lanka’s Waterfall Treasure
Aberdeen Falls is a scenic waterfall located in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka. Nestled amongst the flourishing green hills of Ginigathhena, this mesmerizing natural attraction was named after the Scottish city of Aberdeen. The waterfall's upper waters once powered tea plantations owned by British settlers, linking its name to this rich heritage. It is not as popular as other waterfalls in the area, it does not attract huge crowds on a daily basis, making it an ideal setting and tranquil retreat for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts and travellers who are seeking destinations that are off the beaten path.
A Journey Through the Jungle
Our journey to Aberdeen Falls was an adventure itself. As Aberdeen is one of the closest waterfalls from Colombo, we travelled there by car and the whole route was a scenic drive filled with green plantations and charming countryside landscapes. Once we reached the parking lot of the falls, we had to walk through a winding trail that led us through lush greenery. As we trekked deeper towards the waterfall, we felt like we were in a rainforest. With each step we took, the sounds of the forest symphony grew louder; the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the distant sound of gushing water, which got us more and more eager to see the natural spectacle ahead of us.
The Grand Reveal
And when we finally reached the Aberdeen Falls, in all its majestic glory, the sheer power and beauty of the falls left me speechless. The emerald pool at the base of the falls was a sight to behold, with the shimmering water rippling with the waves created by the majestic waterfall.
A Natural Masterpiece
It was a waterfall like no other I've seen before, with its two-tiered cascade where the water plummets down a sheer cliff, creating a mesmerizing mist that hangs in the air. The first tier is more gradual while the second has a more dramatic drop, where the water plunges into the deep pool below. The sight of water flowing down these two drops create an awe-inspiring visual spectacle. I think I spent quite some time staring at it and getting lost in its mist-filled beauty.
The pool at the base of the waterfall is another noteworthy feature. The clear water plummets into a deep, emerald-green rock pool, creating an enchanting mist that blankets the surrounding area. The pool is quite deep and covers a substantial area, making it an inviting option for kayaking. The water in the pool is generally cool, so it is a refreshing experience, especially after the walk to the falls.
Viewpoints
On both sides of the riverbank at the base of the waterfall, there are observation decks for the public that offers different views, capturing the pool and the lower portions of the falls. While the waterfall can be viewed from various angles along the trail, there is a specific viewing area that provides an unobstructed view of both tiers of the falls. For those who would love to have a refreshing and relaxing one or two days stay by the waterfall, Aberdeen Feel Resort is an ideal location which provides you the luxury of viewing the waterfall up close from your cozy cabin.
We chose to explore all the possible viewpoints and soak up the beauty of the falls.
A Kayak Adventure
I couldn't resist the allure of the water, so I donned my life jacket and hopped into a kayak, ready to venture into the heart of the falls. Thankfully, they had an experienced boatman who took me on this journey, so I knew I was in safe hands! Paddling through the serene pool, we felt the cool spray of water on our faces. The closer we got to the base of the falls, the more intense the experience became. The thunderous roar of the water and the sheer force of the cascade were awe-inspiring. As we navigated through the mist, we felt a sense of tranquillity surrounded by the raw power of nature.
A Culinary Delight with a View
After our exhilarating kayak adventure, we headed to the nearby Aberdeen Feel Resort for a well-deserved lunch. The resort boasts stunning views of the falls, making it the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. As we savoured delicious Sri Lankan cuisine, we couldn't help but be mesmerized by the breathtaking panorama. The resort's strategic location offers guests a unique opportunity to witness the falls from a different perspective, adding another layer of enchantment to the experience.
By dining or staying here, not only do we get to enjoy a relaxing break in the lap of nature, but we also give back to the community by aiding all the people of the area who are working so hard to preserve the heritage, culture and nature of this area.
The Upper Falls
My exploration of Aberdeen Falls didn't end there. After lunch, we crossed over to the other side of the falls by kayak to witness the upper tier. The view from this side was equally impressive, offering a unique perspective of the cascading waters. We spent some time soaking up the serene atmosphere, the sound of the rushing water providing a soothing soundtrack to our contemplation. The upper falls, with its gentler flow and picturesque surroundings, offered a contrasting experience to the powerful lower falls.
Blending with the community and the Nature
Photography
With its dramatic cascades and lush surroundings, these falls are a photographer's dream come true because it gives you the opportunity to click the authentic natural beauty of Sri Lanka. Also, since this waterfall is a lesser-known spot, it is not overcrowded and full of tourists. This gave us the perfect opportunity to take amazing photos, and we didn't have to wait for people to move in order to get the perfect shot.
Early mornings and late afternoons provide ideal lighting for capturing the falls' beauty. Strategically placed viewing platforms allow visitors to frame perfect shots of both the waterfall and its serene pool below. The majestic waterfall provides you the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot.
Kayaking
For thrill-seekers, Aberdeen Falls offers opportunities to kayak in its natural pool. Guided by experienced boatmen, kayakers can get up close to the base of the falls, feeling the refreshing spray of the water. This activity not only offers an adrenaline rush but also a unique vantage point to appreciate the waterfall's grandeur.
Camping Under the Stars
Camping near Aberdeen Falls provides an immersive experience in nature. Imagine spending the night under a starlit sky, with the soothing sound of cascading water as your lullaby. The area around the falls is perfect for setting up camp, offering a blend of tranquillity and adventure. The best part is that the community run campsites provide tents and pillows, making it much easier for travellers to stay. They also have additional facilities such as washrooms and can even arrange food during your stay here. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first timer, this experience will leave you with cherished memories.
Have a Picnic
The area around Aberdeen Falls offers an ideal picnic spot where you can rest and enjoy the scenic beauty surrounding you. Just imagine being surrounded by the refreshing sound of the waterfall, and cool breeze swaying over leaves. There are small kiosks and tea shops on the way to the waterfall run by the community from where you can buy snacks and even lunch on request. It is good to pack easy-to-carry food such as sandwiches, wraps, fruits and salads and unwind beneath the branches of a tree relishing in your delectable meal while adoring the beauty of the surrounding nature.
Hiking
Since the trails around the Aberdeen Falls are in good condition and well maintained with properly marked paths, it is an easy route to take for most hikers who have a decent fitness level. What makes the hike even more memorable is the journey through the forest with diverse flora and fauna surrounding you. It is perfect for families with teenagers or adults. You might come across various types of colourful birds such as beautiful blue Kingfishers, a kind of bird known as Orioles which are known for their melodious songs, and various flycatchers flying among tree branches. These trails usually lead to scenic viewpoints which offer beautiful views of surrounding landscapes. As you go deeper into the forest, you may come across a stream with crystal clear water cascading its way through rocks.
How to Get There
Aberdeen Falls is located in the Nuwara Eliya District, near the Ginigathhena town. Aberdeen Falls is approximately 115 kilometers from Colombo and 68 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya. Visitors can drive, take public transport, or hire a tuk-tuk for the final stretch from Ginigathhena. While the roads are navigable, a private vehicle or guided tour is recommended for convenience.
From Colombo, it takes approximately a 3.5-hour drive. Public transport options include buses that go towards Ginigathhena. From there, you can hire local taxis or tuk-tuks to reach the parking lot of the falls. After this, you need to trek down to see the waterfall.
If you are traveling from Nuwara Eliya, the distance to Aberdeen Falls is around 68 kilometres. The journey by car usually takes about 2-2.5 hours, depending on road conditions. You can choose to rent a car with a driver or drive yourself if you're comfortable navigating Sri Lankan roads. There are also public buses available that run between Nuwara Eliya and Ginigathhena, but you will still need to take a local taxi or tuk-tuk for the final stretch to the falls.
Tips for Travelers
Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Aberdeen Falls is between September and December, when water levels are moderate, and the surrounding greenery is at its peak.
Footwear: Wear sturdy and slip-resistant shoes for the hike down to the falls. The trail might be slippery, especially in the rainy season.
Pack Essentials: Carry water, snacks, sunscreen, and a swimsuit and a towel if you plan to swim. Carry leech socks as the area can be prone to leeches if it has been raining.
Swimming Safety: If you plan to swim, be cautious of the water currents and the varying depth of the pool. Avoid swimming in the centre of the pool as the currents can be unpredictable. Always stay within designated safe zones.
Local Guides: Hiring a guide can enhance your experience, as they provide valuable insights into the local flora, fauna, and history of the area.
Waste Disposal: There are not many trash bins in the area. Carry a small bag with you to collect your trash and dispose of it properly later.
